Driving from Killeen TX to El Paso was a neat drive. As I got farther away from Killeen, the trees got shorter (ultimately, turning into bushes), the grass became more brown and the land became flatter and flatter. I just wonder how people can live so far away for civilization. Some of ranches I passed were really nice and sitting seemly hundreds of acres of land. I think the most interesting area was when I nearing Interstate 10, still on Route 190. You can see how the rain and wind has cut into the land, leaving flat top hills and high plateaus. Interesting look and it reminds of many westerns I've seen. I guess there's a beauty to it. It's just gonna take a while for me to be really interested in it. Maybe in 3-4 months, when the my world isn't so torn.

Slowly Getting Settled

So, in reality, I've been here for a solid 1 month. I'm slowly settling into my authority, my job and being back into a scout platoon. Can't believe how young these new privates are and how much sergeant stripes mean to them. They'd jump off a bridge if I told them to. I guess I'm kinda liking it here. It'll be better when I move out of the barracks. Another thing I like about Germany is that I was ahead of everyone in terms of time. Now that I'm behind everyone, it's like playing catch up. Just a frame of mind.

Back in Texas, Back to a Scout

So here I am, in Texas, FT Bliss... Bliss, such an ironic name for a place I have yet to like. Yesterday morning was a bit of a wake up call. Morning PT at 4000ft elevation, none of which I'm use to ans Staff Duty. The holiday season is over and I'm not sure when I'll see my sweetie pie again. People have grown to like El Paso and I might but as of now I have no car, no household goods and no one I know is here. The heart sinks a bit. Hopefully, it won't last long.

This video was released by Fox Racing Shox. The music and images sum up what I feel when a ride is going well; hitting all my lines, carving the corners and conquering the terrain that's barely walkable, nevermind ride a bike over it. In my head, I have a crowd of me, cheering me on. Cleaning each rock, corner and drop is a small accomplishment to the bigger goal as I fly down the mountain. The feeling of hovering over the trail as trees and bushes blur by is one that can't be replicated. That's why I ride mountain bikes.

So I tried '09 SX Trail and it is not what I expected. It's certainly not a bike that climbs uphill. If I lived near a bike park, I'd easily go for it because it's got a very aggressive geometry, very slack. I think I'd flip back if I tried it taking on the regular uphill trails we normally traverse but it would just bomb down the hills.

Status on Me

So, I haven't spent much time here, collecting my thoughts. We're done with the Christmas Concert Series and I'm looking to relax for the next couple of weeks. I'll be in London this weekend. I haven't been there since I was 14. I assume it'll be dark and gloomy.

On a personal note, I have been feeling a little blue. Things happen that ripple into my life that affects my mood and overall emotional state. Funny how I'm taken as a stone face in my professional life but it does effect me, regardless of how much it may or may not show. In the end, I guess that's how I prefer it. It's better that way but sometimes it's tough hiding my emotions.

On the lighter side, I've been enjoying the new albums I've recently acquired. I'll be doing as much mountain biking as time and weather will allow. It's been a touch cold for biking but I can tough it through. Winter will keep in shape for the summer riding and you'll appreciate the nicer weather more when you know how bad it can be. Plus, it'll tax your skills as a rider with all the sloppy terrain and slippery conditions. When the summer hits, you'll be blasting down the mountain. Killer!!!

So I've been sleeping on Ryan's couch for the past 3 nights. Thanks God I knew someone here in the DC area. So far this has been the most irritating trip I've done back to the states.

Currently, I'm sitting in the USO at BWI. I'm already checked-in and there's plenty of seats. Hopefully, I'll make the flight.

At the very least, hanging at Ryan's was the relaxing part of the whole trip. I've sat on the couch for the past 2.5 days or so, watching the Summer Olympics in high-def although sleeping in my own bed would be great at this point.

So when I left Columbia, Chris and Linda were mostly set. With the additional help from Sue, most of the things got put away. Chris has moved up to a 42" Panasonic Plasma sporting 1080p picture. He figured while he had the truck, he should get a large TV. I agreed...

I wish Chris and Linda the best and again, congratulations. I had the best time at wedding. I'd recommend a backyard wedding to anyone. It was awesome! Unfortunately, there's pictures of me "dancing" or a so-called gyration of the hips. I might have to find and destroy them.

So I couldn't get a flight out of BWI so I decided to head down to South Carolina to help the newlyweds move into the they're new apartment in Columbia. We've already emptied the truck and will be getting more stuff in the morning.

They're are flights leaving Sunday and hopefully, I'll be on it. In the meantime, I'll be spending some quality time with Chris, reconnecting. I haven't seen him since he left for Japan.

Also, my mass email out to people at the unit has rendered an alibi for my absence and extended my leave. I guess I'll see what happens when I get back.

One more hotel night on the road and I'll be back in my own bed. The last night in Lourdes was nice. Night Fire did a acoustic gig that went over very well. It's always nice having Generals on their feet and knocking over drinks. There was a rather large contigency that will remain nameless that stayed up and swam in the pool. The water was warm. I put a packet together to see if I could get an audio position at West Point. I got an email today saying I won't be invited for an audition. I guess the field was really competitive. I still have the Army Band to try out for and I can always extend to stay here at the USAREUR Band which would fine. As of now, I have tentative orders for Fort Drum in upstate New York, YIKEESS.... I hate the cold!

Tomorrow, I'll be leaving for France so I'm packing tonight.

Mixing

For the past 2 months, I've been slowly working on mixing USAREUR's rock band's (called Night Fire) CD. I think I'm finally done. I'm still proofing it. I'll probably find something that needs fixing. These can be a endless pursuit of perfection. They sound good in the studio but both my car and home system are bass heavy so the word is still out. This is the first full length CD I've tracked and mixed. I've done others but nothing this extensive so I'm rather proud of the work.

The CD includes 12 tracks of electric and acoustic covers. It's a snap shot in time as two of the members have moved onto other units. It includes an odd rocked-out version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears. If anyone is interested in listening, I'll be getting up on the web, hopefully soon. If not, email me and I'll send out a copy.

I just got back from a really cool weekend. I was hanging out with some of guys from the Blue Man Group in Oberhausen. I meet the Blue Men the guitarist and some of the drummers. We had some drinks and played some poker.

I got an email from a friend of mine'e wife. Shawn got into a bad car accident and is currently unconscience. I don't know the details and I have yet to talk to his wife.

We served together while in Friedberg. He did two tours in Iraq and is a well decorated soldier. One of my closest friends out of that bunch. He's a really good guy and I hope he'll be ok.

Another Day

So alot has happened since I done the last entry. When I came back from leave, I hit the ground running. Work has been busy. I'll be gone for about a week in a place called Bremen. Hopefully I can clear my head.

Emontional, it's been a mess for the past week. I found out more info about a certain someone. I've probably asked more questions than I should have but at least now I know the truth she's been trying to hide so hard. Good ridence to her.

I've been keeping busy with mixing the Rock Band's CD. Two of the members are PCS'ing to another duty stations. They will be sorely missed. The CD represents a snapshot in time and within it will contain memories. One member will be heading to Fort Hood and soon will be in Iraq. The other meber will be going to Atlanta to another army band. Good luck to the both of them. The unfortunate thing about the Army and is that everything is temporary. People are coming and going. Nothing is ever static. Such is life and the way it goes.

As for me, I'm still here and hopefully for a little long. I haven't seen any orders form DA. I think I'm off their radar for now. Hopefully, I can stay for another year. I enjoy working here and I never thought the army could be like this. If all goes well and I had it my way, my next place of duty will be with the Armyt Field Band near DC. We'll see...

I don't understand why it goes this way. A person starts to date someone, have feeling for each other and something separates the two. Having a relationship in this day and age seems to be incredibly difficult, especially if one person has realistic or unrealistic ideals or goals. I'm be abstract for a reason, to not have this turn into a 50 page blog entry.

The person I've been "seeing" has possibly found someone and wants to "explore" what might be. I have such mixed feelings right now. I know what logically should happen but cringe at the emontional trauma that lies ahead. I've felt this before. Didn't like it then, still don't like it now. I guess I need to move on but I am an emontional person in my own way. Most people don't get to see that side but I do have one.

I guess this is better for her. There's conditions that'll follow her and have for the rest of her life. Finding a person to better suit is better and logical choice but not an easy one.

It seems easier for her than me to move on and I feel less important. Not a good feeling and that is what hurts the most. In retrospect, we had our good times but in the back of my mind, I've kinda known this would never happen but love is fickle.

Regardless, she has yet to call and I have no voicemails...

I haven't fallen off the earth. I just haven't been enthralled to post something. We finished off out Fall Concert Series. It took around the southern half of Germany and ending here in our hometown of Schwetzingen, in the Shloss. It's a place Beethoven played at one time (many many years ago of course). We're getting to ready for Christmas Concert Series. Currently, we have a group in Kosovo. This unit will never deploy so this is the closest some people will get to a "deployment". I'll be heading out with the Jazz Band to Prague, Czech Republic. I'm very much looking forward to that.

I've acquired some toys while away. I've gotten a Garmin Nuvi 370 GPS. It has both Europe and United States maps. There's been many times I wished I had one (mainly because I was lost) and now I do.

I've also upgraded my TV. One of buddies was looking to buy one a HD TV and I sold him mine. I planned on doing it later in the year but call it an early Christmas present for me.

The studio will be receiving a major upgrade. We'll be installing our new ProTools HD system, complete with the ProTools 96 I/O, new mix cards and a dual processor, dual core MacPro with dual 20" cinema monitors. I've got a couple of recording projects coming up so I can put the new system through it's paces.

Currently, we're demo-ing a new Yamaha Digital mixer, the LS9-16, on loan from one of our vendors. It's a bit more powerful than our Mackie but 1/3 of size. It would a perfect mixer for small gigs. Major capacity, complete with Yamaha effects in a small footprint.

All in all, I'm doing well, enjoying my time. There's a group here that rides mountain bikes on regular basis so I've been enjoying that. I'm not too sure when I'll be called back to a combat unit but until then, I'm absorbing as much as I can.

Oktoberfest/Dachau

Last weekend, some of decided to do Oktoberfest since it would be the last weekend. Dachau is only about 20 minutes outside of the city so we stopped on the way back. It was all very interesting. These only some of the pictures, the rest are on my Flickr account.

The second to last picture was a gas chamber disguised as a shower, complete with fake shower heads in the ceiling. The last picture is the crematory. This was built later, after finding the first inadequate.

So my bike is in the shop so my Wednesday night ride with the crew is not to be. I'll be getting it back tomorrow. Hopefully, shifting better than it had gone in.

Currently, I'm looking into some lights. They have now a HID system for bikes, much like the ones you see on the better cars. My ride is a 2006 StumpJumper FSR Comp. It has 5+ inches of travel, front and rear, hydraulic disc brakes, 9-speed cassette and all at about 30 pounds. My how things have changed since I left biking.

I gained more responsibilities since Mike Wehbe is on his way to SF. I have firmly taken over doing sound for Dixieland Band and Little Big Band. In the near future, I'll be doing some shows for the Concert Band and Jazz Band, both should be enjoyable.

Tomorrow, I'll be running another ProTools session. I'll be recording the concert band for the OX. Learning ProTools has been interesting. Some of live sound knowledge has carried over.

I have yet to hear about any orders. I'm hoping branch just forgets about me.

S.O.S. Live Earth Benefit Concert

I've been watching this benefit concert pretty much all day. It's the awareness of the global impact we have on the environment based on our living habits (not recycling, the wasting of electricity, the amount of natural resources used). I have no problem with all the awareness but it's the irony of holding a huge benefit concert held in NYC and London, simultaneously. Acts include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, Sting, Beasty Boys, Roger Waters, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, etc.

This is one huge concert/production. I wonder if the people watching the concert, supporting the issues the concert is being held for, realize how much "power" it takes to run a production like this; the amount of fuel for the trucks to move all that equipment and to fly/bus all the artists in, the amount electricity to run all the amps and lights, the amount of trash 60,000 people make in a relatively small place.

The NFL has a league here in Europe and the just had their Super Bowl yesterday. The USAREUR Band and Chrous did the half time show. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the show because I was running around.

Got some bad news

It looks like I won't be staying here at USAREUR Band for as long as I thought. I'll be going to Baumholder sometime in the fall. Baumholder is 1st Armor Division, 2nd Brigade. They're deploying soon as well. Because I received a bonus, I must be assigned to a combat deployable unit. If I had known, I was would have passed on the bonus. And in the end, it's not so much that I'm leaving sooner than I expected or going back to Iraq but it took me nearly a year to get here because of complications from my last unit.

Maybe hell will freeze over and I'll get to stay.

The Reason for the Name

The name of my blog has changed since its birth. "Lost in Germany" has some tongue-in-cheek connotations. It's the name of the King's X song but I thought it was rather fitting if you ever driven in Germany, if not most of Europe.

US highway signs tell you the route number and what direction you're generally heading in. German signs tell you the route number but don't tell you what direction, just cities. If you don't know you need to pass through Frankfurt to get to Heidelberg from Friedberg, you're kinda stuck. Now Frankfurt is a large city but that doesn't mean the highway signs only gives major cities. I know I've been traveling in the correct direction, en route to given place but have pass through small towns indicated on the highways signs which may make you rethink if you’re heading in the right direction. For a second, you have a panic moment because exits on the autobahn are far apart, and on-ramps and off-ramps look misleading when trying get to them.

When I first got to Friedberg and drove on the highways, it was definitely "Lost in Germany" but have since gotten accustom to the labeling. Since I have moved, it's back to "Lost in Germany".

I find myself humming the song if I'm really lost.

Back to Biking

It's a leftover 2006 Specialized StumpJumper FSR Comp. I've never had a bike with full suspension and hydraulic disc brakes. I'm fascinated with both and continue to tinker with them.

I've added a seat pack and swapped out the Shimano clipless pedals for some Bontrager CNC'ed platform pedals with replaceable spikes. I'm still getting used to the rear suspension. I need to find some better trails. I'm going riding with Mike tomorrow. We're suppose hit some rougher trails.

The Combined Endeavor

I had a show for the Combined Endeavors conference in Frankfurt. 42 countries were represented including some high ranking US Military personnel. It's a NATO level conference. Not too sure what they talk about there was pretty high secuirty. As we were setting up, there we people inspecting the place with mirrors and flashlights. There were also other people in suits with earpieces and sidearms.

The show went well but I still want more low end from the bass drum even though I EQ'ed the hell out of it. I ran the board tonight and I was fine. It's not a hard board to run because of how it's laid out but it's very flexible and powerful.

I think I'm gonna bring the Mackie's 18's next time. I'm gonna do a test run tomorrow or Friday with them.

My Little Red Coupe

It's a 1990 BMW 316i. This car was never imported into the states because BMW only imported the larger engined 3-Series. 1.8 liter engine so I should be getting good gas mileage. It's in really good condition considering it's 17 years old. There's no dents, the paint is still good, the interior is also in good condition. Somebody took care of this car. I've already started to change out the stereo. I've put a pair of Pioneers in the back and the a set of JVC's in the front. The radio is this little, dinky Blaupunkt with no display.

There's nothing wrong with it mechanically but, as with all BMW's of this generation, the interior styling leave something to be desired. It's good basic transportation and should last me until I leave Germany.

Back Online

So I finally got Internet, my own rather than pulling from a wireless connection so it's more stable. I bought a 2006 StumpJumper FSR Comp at really good deal, even with the exchange rate. They don't do morning PT so I got the bike so I can still stay in shape and have fun doing it. I rode it couple of times already but my butt isn't use to riding so I can't ride everyday, yet.

I pickup a 1990 BMW 316 Coupe Tuesday. It's in really good condition. There's no dents or scratches and the interior is perfect. Detailing would make it look even better. The radio sucks in it and it still has a set of winter tires on it but both are no big deal to change and the car care shop is extremely helpful.

I did my second show yesterday for the European Signal Command ball at PHV (Patrick Henry Village). (LTC(P) Bishop was there, my first Battalion Commander.) I want to really sit down with the system and the band so I can really tweak some things. I was not happy with the sound and I personally think they need more monitor mixes. It reminds me when I was doing shows with Sterves or Pthalo/Hyperdrop. Venues are all different and power remains to be a logistical and technical problem. Bad power tends to manifests itself into to odd noises, mainly rearing it's ugly head in the mains. We have the Meyer UPA-1P for mains. Quite compact but very capable. They open, clear, crisp and they seem to breath, a tall order for any speaker, especially a live sound speaker. The subs are Meyer USW-1P. I have yet to form an opinion on these. If anything, conservative is how I would describe them for now. I think they might be a little underpowered for my tastes. Maybe team them up with the Mackie 18" subs for more bottom end but that's just my personal tastes. I like the bass drum to hit in the chest. In the coming weeks, I'll be digging into our seemingly deep resource of equipment to find the right combo for my gigging rig.

All in all, I'm adjusting well here. I'm enjoying the people I work with. This place is very different from a combat deployable unit but the unit seems to fit my overall character better.

I recieved all my house hold goods last week and this place is a bit more homey. Last Sunday the Chorus had a show in Leinman, about 15 mins away from here. I observed and helped out a bit. I wanted to see how everything operated; load-in, setup, sound check, load-out...

It was a Wine and Cheese fest. This show was for a wine distributor. He has it every year for his customers. We got a couple of bottles of wine at the end of the show.

One thing that was really cool was the gear the other sound guy had. His board was Yamaha M7CL. Digital like our Mackie but much more intuative with 48 Channels and about 3 times the price of our Mackies. I spend about 10 mins with it and got comfortable with it. Very easy to use and way cool.

During most of the shows, I was checking out the Mackie. Mostly compressors and EQ's. When I first saw the board, I was intimidated but after working with it, I comfortable with it. Easy to use, sounds good and expandable to 48 channels. You connect up 3, 8 channel digital preamps with LightPipe (fiber optic cable).

The Chorus had a 90 minute set and sounded good, doing Top 40, Country, Rock and some standards. The crowd loved them.

A Day and Wake-Up

I'm nearing the end of my time here in Friedberg. Today, the movers came and picked my stuff. My room seems very empty and I'm very bored with no TV, just my computer and stereo are left.

I'm a bit nervous going into another unit as the "new guy". I haven't been the "new guy" in close to 4 years. But this time, I imagine, it would be a bit easier considering I'm not going into the this new unit as a private. I'm going in there with some rank. Plus, this is a special assignment so there won't 30+ people like me. There will be less than a handful of people with my particular job.

I'm excited and nervous but, I am ready for a change of scenery and a change of people.

I bought a new digital camera. It's a Panasonic DMC-FX50. It's a 7MP camera but the thing I really like about is the 3" LCD screen. I also bought a 1GB SD High Speed Card for storage. It's a major upgrade from what I had. My last digital camera use to eat batteries. At least this one has a lithium rechargeable.

Another 4 Years with the Big Green Machine

I reenlisted for another 4 years Monday. It's another step closer to the USAREUR Band. Tomorrow, I need to pick up a copy of my reenlistment paperwork and bring them to the transition office so they know I'm not leaving the Army anything soon.

The only thing that got me about the whole process was hearing my new ETS (Estimated Time of Separation), 2011...!!! That just sounds like it's so damn far away. I hope it goes by as quickly as the last 4 years.

I spent all of the evening installing a new drive and copying my data over to it. My data drive was failing so it was race against the final demise of the logic board that runs the mechanics of the drive. As one would guess, the copying of 160GB of data was slow and painful with a drive that was failing as it would only run properly for about 15 minutes, then reboot and start copying again. Besides that, it corrupted some of my data before I got it off of it which only added to the headache. I needed more storage space anyways. I filled my "old" 160GB drive in 4 months.

My poor computer. It's a Compaq I got at the PX. I've disabled the onboard audio card and installed a sound card that supported 5.1 surround and has a optical digital out since I was getting so much interference for the many powers cords I have here. It's connected to my home theater system (iTunes in 5.1..!!!). I also installed a better video card (supports my movie/TV show watching habits) to support dual monitors and it has S-Video out which is connected to my TV. I've installed more memory, from the measly 256MB that it came to a more respectable 1GB. I have 2 drives in it; 120GB for the OS and apps and now a 400GB for data. Months before, I got a BlueTooth dongle for the Motorola earpiece (same one used for cell phones) to talk on Skype. Not that I needed it but I'm not directly connected with the computer via a wired headset. Much cooler too... :D

My latest obsession has been the LinkSys WRT54G router. The firmware was reflashed to a hot rod version. I've been turning up the processor speed. Hopefully, I don't brick it. With 2 high gain antennas, I've been able to reach almost 3 times the distance than the standard setup.

Even though I left the computer industry almost 4 years ago, I've been the resident computer tech in these parts. Maybe I should start charging... Hrmmm...

Next time, I'm building my own computer; with a Duo Core processor, at least 2GB of memory, 1TB of storage and maybe Windows Vista, but again, I'll cross that bridge when it's time.

So here's the deal. I have an assignment but assignments doesn't necessarily mean I'm getting the job outlined in the assignment. Plus, my report date was the 10th of March and it was already the 15th. To change that, I need to have enough time in the Army for the assignment to be valid. To have enough time, I need to reenlist for at least the amount of the assignment, 2 years, in this case. So I need to talk to the Division Reenlistment Personnel. Well, it so happens, the Division Reenlistment guy is on TDY (Temporary Duty) and an E8 is taken over until he returns. Currently, this E8 is extremely busy with the redeployment of 1AD and I'm probably gonna have to pester him to get back to me.

I plan on reenlisting for another 3 or 4 years, depending on what the bonuses look like. There is a possibility of staying with the USAREUR Band through 4 years but that is slim and I think at 4 years, I'll need a change of scenery. Maybe I'll get an offer for the West Point Band (in New York State) which is a permanent position. As you might expect, a permanent position is the Army is extremely rare and I would only be 1.5 to 2 hour drive from my family and friends. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

SGT Mike Wehbe is my regular contact at the USAREUR Band. The story hasn't changed for me, still waiting for my unit to let me go. I guess once I get there, I'll be taking over NCOIC duties since I seem to have the most experience, both as a NCO and with live sound. SGT Wehbe will be off to Special Forces Selection.

Since the last time I talked to him, they've recieved their 3 Mackie TT24 live digital consoles and replaced they're wireless mics with a new rack of Shures. I'm looking forward to working with both of them.

Been in the Studio

I've been helping one of the guys here that's doing a track for a documentary. The studio had this drum set, a Pearl Masters Custom, 4 Ply in the scream-at-me yellow as you see here. Love the Union Jack on the bass drum. It was fun to play drums again and nice to know I haven't completely lost all of my abilites. Even played to click track!

Well...

I'm still here and I work in the S4 office. S4 is Supply but I don't know a thing about. I didn't signup to be a paper pusher.

The knee is doing fine, still weak but working on that. I'm running again, done with being on treadmill, thankfully.

I ran into a document as I was exploring on 1st AD servers. It sounds like a speech someone prepped but I liked one of lines in it. It was titled "What is a Vet" and it reads:

"Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. My favorite line is " it is the soldiers who serves beneath the flag". For me, it sums up how I feel being in the military. More than any other job I've had, I have a sense of job satisfaction, when I'm working as a scout, of course. I have a sense of something greater than me, greater than the people I work with.

I had people come up to me, shake my hand and say "thank you". I'm always humbled and it always catches me off guard. I never really know what to reply with. I usually say "you're welcome" and smile but the "you're welcome" may come off as arrogant which isn't my intent. As if saying, "yes it was me that did all that work; you know, the liberation of Iraq and fighting the insurgencey..." This is a classic example of the sum is greater than it's parts. There's nearly 1 million people in the Army, all doing their part, making it all work. I'm a scout but without the machanic fixing my truck, or the cook making the meals that I eat, or the supply sergeant getting the bullets and things I need for a mission, I'm just a person walking around in the desert, with a bunch of other people walking around in the desert.

Lately I've been thinking about staying the Army, reguardless if I get Westpoint as a duty station. Any other job after this just seems... well... ordinary.

I'm back in German and everything is just as I left it. Still fighting the jet lag. Good thing I have 4 day weekend.

This time, saying goodbye was harder than usual. Usually I'm somewhat indifferent but this time I was sad to leave. Maybe because I didn't spend enough time with my family. Most of leave was traveling but I'm not saying I didn't enjoy myself. I know I'll be back and I'll some of those people for New Years but still, the feeling is staying with me. I know it will subside like it has in the past but leaving the states was a bit emontional for me this time.

Other than that and my back seemingly to be molting, everyting is normal, ie boring.

I need to do something with Tony next time.

Currently, I'm back from Charleston, Chris is all moved in and tomorrow will be the marathon ride home. My bank hasn't been all that cooperative but thanks to Chris, all hasn't been a failure. Charleston is beautiful and seemingly, very rich and clean which is a nice change from the north.

I'm not looking forward to going back to Germany, mainly because I haven't spent a whole lot of time with the family but unfortunately, I don't have many options.

Less Than a Week

I'm still here and alive. I'll be in the States in less than a week.

Progress with my knee has reached a plateau. Flexibility and extention are all good. Now it's a matter of strength. I've gained some weight since I can't run so I'm not so svelte as I usually am. I'll have to get on the elliptical machine if my physical therapist allows me.

I've gotten very interested in BitTorrent. It's kinda like Scour or Kazaa without all the spyware crap. I think I've collected all the Top Gear episodes that I can. It's a British motoring show, funny and informative.

News about the USAREUR gig has slowed. I emailed them yesterday but nothing yet. I'm extending to cover the time here regardless if I get the assignment now or later. Plus the extra recorded time here will allow me to get the PRK laser eye surgery. Soon, I won't have to worry about glasses or contacts.

Stay the Course

Nearly a month ago, I had knee surgery. Now I can walk without crutches or a brace so my recovery time is coming along quite nicely with the help of daily physical therapy. I've regain most of the mobility of my knee but the final 10 degrees of flex is still awaiting.

I've gotten quite use to not working but I'll be going back to work this week. The USAREUR Band is going to try to get me in July for the 30 day temporary duty assignment which I'll be looking forward to.

From what I know, the guys are doing well in Iraq. I hear from them from time to time.

I had my knee surgery Monday and I stayed over one night so they can monitor any after affects from the anesthetics. I was pretty loopy and nauseated when I woke up but I'm doing fine now. They sent me off with Percocet, Morphine, Promethazine and Docusate. The Percocet I normally take every 4 hours along with the Promethazine and I take the Docusate twice a day. The Morphine is when the pain gets really bad but I don't see that happening. My pain level is much better than yesterday.

I had my first physical therapy appointment this morning and that hurt, a lot. My biggest problem is lifting my leg straight. Since I worked out before the surgery, I should heal quickly and regain all of my abilities soon.

I went to get my knee surgery done today but it didn't happen. I guess my new ACL is at Frankfurt International Airport, with Customs. I guess they want to make sure no one is importing body parts to eat. Now, who's gonna eat a ligament, maybe to floss with but eat...?

Anyways, a person from the company that shipped it out needs to fly to Frankfurt and verify that it's not going to a cannibal. My surgery is rescheduled for Monday. This puts a kink in my plans for Berlin. Hopefully, I can still get the car (they may wonder how I'm suppose to drive a car if I limp into the place) and hopefully I can still drive since I have less healing time. *SIGH*

So I finally broke down and bought one. I went on a run last weekend and my CD player was skipping like crazy so I decided I needed one of these. It's an iPod Nano 2GB. They were all out of the 4GB model. I also got an armband for when I'm working out and for the next 6 months or so, I'll be doing a lot of that.

It has about 24 hours worth of music. I rip my mp3's at a high bitrate so the I couldn't fit 1,000 songs, about 330. Most of my mp3's are at least 192kbit. It's tiny and weighs almost nothing.

I was a bit skeptical about the headphones that came with it but they aren't that bad, actually pretty good. The headphones that I already have are a set of Sennheiser HD280 studio headsets and a set of Shure E3C in-ear monitors. The Sennheisers are great but big and the Shures block all the surrounding sounds, actaully they both do that. So both are bad choices for running on the road. And they both have really long cords.

Anyways, I'm excited. This will be my last computer purchase for awhile. The Motorola Bluetooth earpiece is great but a kind of a pain to set up. It's so tiny and wireless. I use it talk on Skype.

Oh wait, I do need to buy one more thing, an external sound card. I play music from my computer. I rarely play CD's now but I have a horrible EMF problem, that 60 HZ buzz comes through the subs. The sound card that I'm looking at has optical out. Hrmmm, that means I'll have to buy a USB hub...

The USAREUR Band Audio Tech Interview

I had my interview and it went well. It's a small group of 4 people that provide the sound for up to eight different bands. (Not all eight bands are out at the same time) They have pretty good equipment that's gonna get better. The have three Mackie TT24 that are on order, which will be nice. It's a digital live sound board with built-in gate, compressor/limiter and 4 band EQ on each channel. It also has 4 internal effects processors. This is a board I'll probably never own because of the price, running about $7,000 a piece. They also have 12 Mackie SWA1801 which are 18" active subs powered by a 800 watt amp, a bigger version of my SRS1500.

The first step was an actual sit-down interview. They asked about my background in the audio field which most of it is derived from a hobby but with some real road experience. They asked some technical question. Stuff like current loads (voltage and amps), resistance loads (ohms), power compatibility (amp power mating to speaker capabilities), balanced and unbalanced signals, type of connectors (XLR, 1/4", RCA), microphone choice (such as mic'ing a drum set and guitar cab), condenser vs. dynamic vs. ribbon microphones, using and understanding a compressor, effect choice (gated reverb, hall reverb, plate reverb)... stuff like that. Some stuff I had a problem answering because I just flat don't use that knowledge but for the most part, they were impressed with what I knew.

The next step was a hands on example of putting a simple PA system together. They had a rack of Shure wireless receivers, a SR32-4 (the bigger brother of my board), a pair of Mackie SA1530z and an old RCF active 10" speaker, much like the Mackie SRM450, as a monitor. I had to demonstrate I can put a system together and have it work. I had a Shure wireless mic as a source. This was a piece of cake considering my personal system is much more complex and lots more outboard gear. So no problem there...

The last was a mixing exercise. I sat in front of a Mackie 24-8 8 Bus Console connected to 3 DigiDesign 888 I/O units, a Mac G4 was running ProTools with dual screens and monitoring speakers were a set of Genelecs. A decently nice recording setup. Nothing out of this world but definitely some nice tools to make a good sounding album. Basically, they gave me a ProTools session and I had to mix from the Mackie console. No big deal other than the fact I never worked on a Mackie 8 Bus Console. I've seen plenty of them but never work on one. It had some features I never used but not all that different than my SR24-4. All in all, I didn't have much of a problem. They liked what they heard. One thing was that I forgot to pan the right and left overhead room mics. Opps. It widens the sound, giving it depth. It's like night and day when this is done but they didn't think it was a big deal.

When all was done, they were interested in getting me down there for the 30 day temporary duty ASAP, pending my knee surgery with some time to recover. What they liked was my experience with similar equipment, my knowledge of audio technology, autonomy and the fact I have some real world experience with live sound. My weakness was in the studio setting. I have never worked with ProTools and general studio experience has been limited to my observations of Chris. I mix like I'm at a show, vocals on top, with good attack and punch on the overall mix. Sometimes that's not the answer when mixing in the studio but they just wanted to hear how I mix.

A few things make my exciting about doing this special assignment. First, it's similar equipment to what I'm use to which takes a lot of the fear factor out of it. I remember getting back to States after Iraq, taking my newly bought system on the road. I was nervous. I bought a bunch of new equipment when I was Iraq and hadn't really gotten comfortable with it yet.

They seem to be a big Mackie house there which is no big deal at all. I have some Mackie products and I've always found good value within the Mackie line, providing good quality sound without breaking the bank. There's also things I've never used such as the ProTools setup, wireless mic's, mixing bands other than a rock band and studio recording/mixing. I also have found out you can make this you're whole Army career which may be an option for me.

And now for the dreaded Army paperwork... *sigh*...

The BMW 1 Series

I've driven a lot of different cars while being Germany, 15 year old VW hoopties to some of nicest cars Mercedes and BMW has to offer. A typical favorite of mine is Mercedes Benz E-Class for the long trips I take for a weekend get away. I rented a little BMW 1 Series, a car not available in the States. It has a little 4 banger of a motor but there some interesting features in this car of the price category.

First of all, it's a odd looking BMW, much like Mazda Protege5, a wagon-esque 5 door. The key for the little Bimmer is a FOB that has the usual Lock, Unlock and Truck buttons. You push the FOB into the dash until clicks. This turns on the ignition and press "Engine Start/Stop" button thus starting the car. Other little things that make life easier such as Climate Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Skid Control (all can be deactivated for fun in the snow) and heated seats. Amazing how many options on a little car such as this. It also has little white lights that light up the ground next to the car, shining from the 4 door handles. As with all European cars, the headlights have angle adjustment, an interesting little feature that I wish American cars had. It also has a DVD based navigation system with a motorized flip-up screen and a passenger side mirror that aims itself to the curb when the car is put into Reverse. And I love the motorized folding side mirror at the touch of a button for the tight parking spots or when parking your car on the sides of the streets. If you knew the little roads of Germany, you'll know how appreciative this feature can be.

Driving is of typical BMW feel, nice power (even from the 4 banger engine), nice responsive suspension and steering that is BMW typical, communicative and direct. The chassis has a button-down feel, feeling the road nicely but not obtrusive making the car quite fun to drive.

I wonder why American cars can't have all these features in a package that is fun to drive and affordable.

Again, another thing I'll miss when I leave Germany.

So...

I have an appointment at Heidelberg for a consultation on March 2nd. Hopefully they can get me in ASAP. I guess most of the orthopedic doctors are being deployed leaving 1 for the soldiers back in garrison. *sigh*

Rear Detachment is quite boring. Most if the time, it's just busy work. A lot of the personel are here for medical reasons, like me, or for legal reasons because (they go into toruble). Whatever the case is, I'm bored.

I'll be getting DSL internet in my room and so I'll again have presence on the web. I already got my cable TV. I figured I'll be spending much time in my room. I furnished my room with a small area rug and large sectional wraparound couch. Got the couch at the Thrift Store for $50. Fits nicely. Good thing I have a whole room to myself.

I'll get pictures.

The MRI results came back. I have a partial torn ACL, a tear in my meniscus (the cartiledge between the two bones) and a hairline fracture in my upper tibia. I already started the paperwork to go back to Germany.

So there's a crinkle in the plans. I saw our PA yesterday for a follow-up exam on my knee. He referred to the Navy doctor that is deployed here. I saw him this morning and he said my knee needs surgery to get my full mobility back which brings up a logistical nightmare and crinkles my plans.

There's a couple of things I could do. Go back as soon as I can and get the surgery done. I could also just wait and deal with the pain when there is pain and get it done when I re-deploy back to Germany. The last option is to wear a knee brace and see how much I can deal with. Once I can't stand it anymore, I'll get sent back to Germany for the surgery. Nothing is concrete and I have to discuss my options with the PA and doctor.

I'd rather stay if I could. Leaving now would make me feel I haven't fulfilled my duties and camaraderie and brotherhood that I have with the guys, I would feel I've let them down.

I'm here is Kuwait, staging to head north. There's plenty to eat and not much to do so I'm eating Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Burger King, enjoying it as I soon won't have it. They'll have haul me on a flatbed to Iraq if we stay here any longer though.

It's in the 70's and sunny. Damn nice weather of January.

I'll keep in touch as much as I can.
